Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and one of Central Europe's oldest cities. At one point in its history Zagreb was divided into two separate municipalities, the Gradec (the Upper Town) and the Kaptol (the Lower Town).  In 1850, both sections were united into one city. Most of the historic quarter lies between the original boundaries of the Upper and Lower Towns. One can easily spend days here exploring the historic quarter's churches, buildings and beautiful squares, not to mention a plethora of interesting (and sometimes odd) museums. I loved Zagreb, and being there at the start of the Christmas market season was an added bonus.
