On Day Seven of our tour we traveled to Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost province. This region is part of the 'Golden Triangle', where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos converge along the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers. The term 'Golden Triangle' refers to the intense opium trade that once existed in this part of the world. Today, much of that trade has been replaced by legitimate agricultural farming; although, smuggling still occurs in some areas. We spent most of the day traveling from Sukhothai to Chiang Rai on Day Seven, along the way we stopped to visit a textile shop and museum in the city of Hat Siao. On Day Eight we visited the Choui Fong Tea Farm in Sa Peng before continuing on to the old city of Chiang Saen to take a long tail boat ride along the Mekong River in the 'Golden Triangle'. Afterwards, we boarded two local jeep trucks and drove to an outdoor restaurant situated a few kilometers into the countryside. We later returned to Chiang Saen to visit the House of Opium museum to learn more about the 'Golden Triangle' and the history of opium in the region.
