Located along the Adriatic coast in the Kvarner Gulf of western Croatia, Opatija is a beautiful seaside resort area. The town is very popular during the summer and parts of winter, but when we arrived it appeared as if the tourist season was over. During the 1800s, this former fishing village attracted the attention of wealthy entrepreneurs and aristocrats who built the town into the summer retreat it is today. Many of the grand historic homes situated near the coastline have been converted into hotels and other businesses. A continuous promenade stretches from one end of the town to the other and is a delight to stroll.
