Sarajevo

Situated within the Sarajevo Valley along the Miljacka River and surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, Sarajevo is the largest city in Bosnia-Herzegovina. As such, the city serves as the political, financial, and cultural center of the country. Sarajevo is also known for its religious and cultural diversity and is one of those rare European cities where you can find a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic church and an Eastern Orthodox church all in the same neighborhood. A fact made even more impressive when you consider the ethnic cleansing campaigns carried out during the Bosnian War of the 1990s. The city endured 1,425 days of siege and was  subjected to constant bombing and sniper attacks. Despite the atrocities committed by all sides in the conflict, and the lingering resentments which followed, Sarajevo today still seems to embrace its tradition of diversity. I got the sense that young people in particular wanted to move on from the war and focus on the future. A hopeful sign for the rest of the world.
