On Day 6 of our Balkans tour we left Dubrovnik traveling along the Adriatic coast and then proceeded into Bosnia-Herzegovina. On our way to Sarajevo we stopped to tour the medieval town of Mostar. Situated along the Neretva River in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mostar was named after the bridge keepers who protected the town's famous bridge during medieval times. The town was an important part of a trade route that stretched from the Adriatic to the central regions of Bosnia. In the 1400s the area came under Ottoman rule and the town began to prosper and grow. Today, the Old Quarter of Mostar still retains its Muslim medieval roots and is a popular stop for tourists on their way to Sarajevo.
