On the evening of our second day in Siem Reap a group of us boarded tuk-tuks and headed over to the famous Pub Street section of the city to have dinner. Pub Street caters to the throngs of tourists who come to Siem Reap to visit the nearby Angkor Wat ruins. This festive street is lined with bars, clubs, restaurants and stores and is brightly lit up at night. After dinner, Fatima, Helene, Leanne and I walked over to the adjacent Night Market to look around. One of the many activities we did on the following day was to tour the Angkor National Museum, a wonderful stop for those who love museums (like I do). Here, we learned about the three different periods of Cambodian history: the Pre-Angkorian Period (covering the 1st to the 8th centuries); the Angkorian Period (from the 9th to the 13th centuries -- the time of Angkor Wat ); and the Post-Angkorian Period (from the 14th to the 20th centuries). The galleries contain a fascinating collection of statues and artifacts from the country's early history. I have posted below a representative sample of some of the exhibits from the museum. If you visit the archaeological park that includes Angkor Wat then I highly recommend this museum. It will definitely enhance what you saw and learned about the archaeological ruins and give you a deeper insight into the history of the ancient Khmer Empire.
