On the fifth day of our cruise we arrived at the port of Juneau, the capital city of Alaska located along the Gastineau Channel in the southeastern part of the state.  We had booked a whale-watching excursion for this stop, hoping to view some humpback whales.  Unfortunately, this is not the month when humpback whales like to swim and jump in the bay where our expedition boat took us. We only managed to see a few orcas, and that was from a distance. We did see a group of sea lions sleeping and sunning themselves along the shoreline, and the mountain views were very nice, as well. We spent a little time walking through Juneau, the city was celebrating some kind of maritime festival and the pier was pretty busy. We found Juneau to be very picturesque,  surrounded by green mountains. The city depends heavily on tourism, and it is a popular stop for cruise ships. The port area is lined with shops and restaurants catering to the tourists.
